Pacing guides are year-long teaching plans. It is when you take all your standards and plan out the order you will teach them. Today, I am going to share a FREE math guide for 3rd grade!

How to Use This Pacing Guide

Use it as a guide. You don’t have to teach each piece of content for the same number of weeks I provided. If your students are not getting a concept, take more time. If they get it super quickly, take less. This is a guide to make planning a little easier.

Print it and edit it how you’d like. Then, keep it near your planner or by your desk. This will make it easier to decide what to plan next when you start planning for your next unit! 

How to Decide the Order to Teach

For math, you always want to start with review work first. So, things like addition and subtraction. 

Then, I want to teach the most important standards for that grade level. So, for third grade, that would be multiplication, division, and fractions.

Finish up with everything else!

Do you follow this no matter what?

Nope!! This is a rough outline! You can’t make a 100% plan until you really know your students for that year. So, I will typically take this plan and keep it next to me when I plan for the week. If the students show proficiency in what we did last week then I will go with my scope, but if they don’t, I may need to move around things. If I don’t get to some of the concepts at the end of the guide, I am okay with that. 

What do you do with this pacing guide?

I keep it printed in my lesson planner and I put it on the desktop of my computer. When I sit down to plan, I pull out my scope and sequence to see what I need to teach for the next week. I can write on this if I need to move things and check them off when my students show proficiency. This way I always know that I taught each standard and can prove it if needed.
