Step into a world of adventure and friendship with our 5 fun and educational Because of Winn-Dixie activities for kids. Based on Kate DiCamillo’s book, Because of Winn-Dixie, these activities will engage your students’ imagination and help them explore important themes like love, forgiveness, and acceptance.
In this post, I am going to share 5 learning activities that you can do to go along with the novel Because of Winn-Dixie.
Because of Winn-Dixie Activity 1: Character Analysis Through Drawing
Have students visualize what each character looks like after reading a few chapters. Discuss how different aspects of their drawing point to aspects of their character traits. This Because of Winn-Dixie Activity is an easy one that really helps students to learn important comprehension skills.
Activity 2: Moral of the Story
Have students analyze and discuss what the moral of the story is. Discuss what Gloria learned and how they can apply it to their real lives. Have students choose one situation in which they could apply the moral of the story to their lives. Then, move around the room talking to different friends. Have them listen to their different situations where they used Gloria’s lesson.
Activity 3: Chapter 16- The Civil War
In chapter 16, they discuss the Civil War. Have students create detailed questions about the Civil War and then they can research the answers to those questions. This can help students with asking questions, research, and a social studies component.Â
Activity 4: Creating a House
Have students create a house that would be perfect for Opal, the preacher, and Winn-Dixie. Then, explain why that would be the perfect house. With the explanation they can show what they know about each character.
You could have them draw this house or do this as a STEM project and have them use recycled materials to draw it!
Activity 5: Movie Review and Comparision
After reading, watch the movie! Then, have students compare the book and the movie. Also, have them write a movie review on the movie!
