The Chocolate Touch is a fun novel for kids of all ages and The Chocolate Touch activities I am going to talk about today will bring the book to the next level! It is a great book to do as a book study in your classroom because it is engaging to all kids and provides several learning opportunities. In this post, I am going to share 5 activities that you can do while reading!
The Chocolate Touch Synopsis
“The Chocolate Touch” by Patrick Skene Catling is about a boy named John who loves chocolate. When he discovers a magical coin that turns everything he touches into chocolate, he’s thrilled at first. Soon, his obsession leads to unexpected consequences, as things and even people start turning into chocolate! John learns important lessons about greed and the true value of things. This novel is short and not super hard to comprehend, which makes it great for a whole class read aloud!
Building Vocabulary with The Chocolate Touch Activities
There are so many great vocabulary words throughout this novel! Choosing one or two vocabulary words to focus on per chapter is a great way to use the novel to build vocabulary and knowledge! Here are some things you can do with the vocabulary words you choose…
- Stop in the read-aloud when the vocabulary word comes up. Put that word on the board and break it down using syllable division rules (directly show students how to figure out the pronunciation of the word). Then, use context clues to think-aloud how to determine the meaning of the word. Once you figure out the meaning of the word, reread that selection with your kiddos.
- After you get several words into your word bank, do a vocabulary activity with those words. Some examples are…
- Have students look at how the word is used in the novel and then go and find other ways the word could be used.
- They could write silly sentences using the word. Bonus: have them use the characters from the story in their sentences, this way they have to think about the characters and what they might say or do.
They could also do any of these SOR vocabulary activities with the words you find!
Descriptive Words Activity
Catling does an amazing job at using descriptive words throughout the novel. So, use that for a great lesson! Have students write all the words that Catling uses to describe foods in the story. He does a great job at describing bacon, cupcakes, and toast. Then, have them pick their favorite food. Have them write a description of that food, one similar to Catlings.
Then, the students can read the descriptions to the other students in the classroom, and they can guess what the food is.
Character Analysis with John is a Great “The Chocolate Touch” Activity
John is a very interesting character who goes through a lot of different emotions throughout the novel. Look at the different emotions that he goes through and have students recall when they see these emotions. Then, have students take a look at what those emotions motivated John to do. You could also have them compare/contrast a time that they felt that emotion. Some of the emotions you could look at are excitement, embarrassment, shame, and hunger.
Final Projects
One of my favorite parts of any novel study is the final project. I love to let students be creative and show what they learned during the novel. Some great final project ideas included:
- Chocolate Store- Students can create a new candy store that will sell things that John would want to buy now that the novel is over.
- Comic Strip- Students can create a comic strip to show a scene in the novel.
- Song- Students can write a song that relays the lessons learned throughout the novel.
- Book Commercial- Plan, film, and create a commercial to advertise The Chocolate Touch.
