Valentine’s Day is exciting for children. In order to keep students learning all week long, you need highly engaging and rigorous work! The week of Valentine’s Day I focus on review in all subjects, while keep students working hard and highly engaged.

Reading Centers

I love doing reading centers in my classroom! Each day we do one 20 minute center.

• Students listen and watch Valentine’s Day stories being read to them!
• They read two close reads and compare and contrast their point of view.
• They use pictures to create their own stories.
• They work on figurative language.
• They do a teacher lesson with me where we read a mini book and focus on many skills!

 

Reading Lessons

• We read “Cam Jansen and the Valentine’s Day Mystery” all week long. Find the affiliate link here! Each day we read a few chapters, do discussion questions, and then do an activity. The activities focus on a different skill each day and are highly engaging to the students! Plus, they help you decorate the room in academic Valentine’s Day decor! 😉

• We read “Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch” and focus on how character change in a story!

• The students do a group project where they learn about how a different country celebrates Valentine’s Day through close reading original stories that are provided!

 

Grammar/Writing

• Students practice quotations and commas through a “Love to Fix-It” activity.
• We do a lesson on how to address an envelope correctly. You watch videos, go over a PowerPoint, and practice! Then, students write a love letter to their parents, going through the entire writing process. After that students get to address a real envelope and send it to their house! SO.MUCH.ENGAGEMENT.

Math Centers

You can’t not have math centers! Students LOVE them! I would also do one center each day for 20 minutes this week.

• Math Facts- Students do a math maze where they have to solve addition and subtraction facts to get to the end of the maze.
• At Your Seat- There is a math review sheet called I LOVE MATH!
• Technology- Students can scan QR codes or type in websites for many math-related games or activities!

• Hands-On- They play a math fact practice game where they can bump each other off to get four in a row! They also can use candy hearts to add to engagement!

• Teacher Time- There is a multistep word problem lesson! This requires students to practice or learn how to solve a word problem that has more than one step!

Math Lessons

• There is a word problem race, which guess what?! I am providing it to you for FREE! By putting your email below you can grab it for free! Students do multistep word problems in order to find out which student brought which valentine. So rigorous and so fun!

• We work through an equivalent fraction lesson which involves candy hearts, so highly engaging! 🙂
• The students complete fun math riddles that require them to use logic!

Science

• Candy heart STEM is a must! Students complete four different challenges where they have to use candy hearts to create something or solve a problem. They might be creating a maze or getting the heart from one side of the room to the other without using their hands! 😉
• 
• Life Cycle Love- Students research the life cycle of one animal and then they create a lesson plan to teach the rest of the class about that animal!

Social Studies

• We have to research the history of Valentine’s Day and create a timeline!
• Then, the students work on budgeting when they plan and create valentines for two family members!
