In December, engaging your students in challenges that will require them to read and think is essential. It is during this time that find engagement is key!
Holidays Around the World Challenge
This challenge requires them to go through 8 different countries. They have a passport that takes them through each country.
At each country they will read a passage and answer text dependent questions.
Each country requires them to work on a different skill.
What skills do they work on and what countries do they visit?
In Germany, Students will work on compare and contrasting two informational pieces. They also will put their inferencing skills to the test!
In Sweden, students are working on point of view.
In Mexico, students are working on Text Structure and Timelines.
In Israel, students are working on context clues.
India they work on Literal and Nonliteral Statements.
In Italy, they work on looking at images and relate that to the text.
In Australia they are working on main idea and details.
And in Kwanzaa in America they are working on Character Traits.
What happens when they complete the challenge?
For me, this is how we earn our holiday party! But you could also do a movie or a small reward like extra technology time.
Can I do this virtually?
Yes! It is on Google Slides as well!
How long does this take?
You could do this entire challenge in a day, but it would take the entire day.
You could also just do one challenge a day for two weeks.
Really, it is up to you how you want to set it up!
This challenge is a fun way to allow your students to learn about different holidays around the world while staying fully engaged!
