How Santa Got His Job by Stephen Krensky
This is one of my very favorite holiday books! We do a real life application with this book and then complete an entire persuasive writing prompt with it! The students apply for the role of “Santa” and then persuade me to give them the job! You can check out the unit here!Â
Memories of an Elf
Do you have an Elf in your classroom?! If so, this is a great book to pair with it! This book is super relatable to kids and they laugh the entire time!
A World of Cookies for Santa
This is a GREAT book for your holidays around the world lesson. It gives a look inside different holidays around the world! I like to read this book and then do a web-quest with research to have kids research different holidays around the world!
Daddy Christmas, Hanukkah Mama
I LOVE this book! It takes a look at a family who celebrates two different holidays. I think it is a great way to show students that not everyone does things the way that they do. It can help to open their eyes to differences. After reading this book I suggest having the students write about their own traditions and compare each others!
Pick a Pine Tree
This is a fun story to talk about all the different things that happen in December. It is an easy read about going to pick a tree!
The Polar Express
Doesn’t everyone love The Polar Express! I have a whole unit I use with this book that is focused on upper elementary students! Check it out here!Â
Chapter Books
Deck the Halls Were Off the Walls
My kids LOVE these series of books. They are always hilarious and make them laugh the entire time. This is what I will be reading first during read aloud time!
The Last Holiday Concert
Doesn’t everyone just love this book? It is a fun read that your students will enjoy. It follows a student who becomes in-charge of their holiday concert because their teacher stepped down! Great read aloud!
Magic Tree House Christmas in Chamelot
Every 3rd grader LOVES the Magic Tree House books and this is no exception! After read out loud this one I challenge my kids to grab another Magic Tree House from my books and read it over Christmas break!
A Boy Called Christmas
This is a great way to bring Santa to the older crowd. It follows a boy who is eleven and isn’t afraid to believe in magic. I think this one pairs perfectly with the upper elementary crowd during Christmas time!
I hope these suggestions gave you some new ideas this holiday season!
Hannah Wilde
I am so glad you’re here! I love helping 3rd-5th grade teachers by providing ideas, engaging resources, and professional development they need. I am a literacy coach who is here to help lessen the workload for teachers while making them more confident! I want students to be continually engaged in a rigorous environment!
